My 3 main texts appeal to their intended audience in contrasting ways,
and the extent of the appeal is demonstrated through social media, media
coverage, the box office figures and multiple other ways. My first text is
Skyfall (2012) directed by Sam Mendes and produced by Barbara Brocolli has been
a global success with a box office gross of $304 million dollars. In terms of
awards, this film has won 2 Oscars, 2 baftas and a golden globe, this
demonstrates that it was a popular film within the industry and these awards
are audience voted therefore the popularity is high. Additionally, Skyfall is
one of the James Bond Films, some of the others including, Casino Royale
(2006), Quantum of Solace (2008) and Spectre (2015) therefore the platform for
this film was large before it had even been released since a big fan base of
James Bond films already existed. On the down side, the expectation for this
film was huge therefore it had to deliver, and much speculation was expected on
social media before the release. With Skyfall, although the film falls into the
genre of action and adventure, the sub genre of ‘Bond Films ‘has since become a
category as there is a series of the films. It is evident that as a genre has
been created for this film, the appeal to the audience is high.
My second text is Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014), written and
directed by Matthew Vaughn. This was the first film of its form so unlike
Skyfall didn’t have a platform to stand on before it was released. The use of
star power is evident within this film to appeal to audiences as UK favourite
actor Colin Firth is a protagonist within the film, with other high regarded
actors Taron Egerton and Samuel L Jackson. This appeals to audiences because it
means that actors/actresses that are popular in the industry and therefore
provide a bigger opportunity for a larger audience. Contrasting to Skyfall, Kingsman
brought in a box office gross of $128 million, which is significantly lower
than Skyfall but significantly higher than Weekend (2011) which was written and
directed by Andrew Haigh. In the trailer of the film the protagonists Tom
Cullen and Chris New are introduced which tells the audience that they are new
actors making their debuts, which may not be as appealing to an audience since
they are not familiar with them yet since this film fits into the gay/lesbian
genre, a genre that can be argued as a category with a niche audience, it means
that the film is more likely to be appealing.
It's good you included the directors of the films and you've started to develop a successful answer for Skyfall. However, you need to include an equal amount of information for the other two texts.
ReplyDeleteI like that you mentioned the awards Skyfall won. It's a good way of measuring audience appeal to the film and presents the popularity of the film. Maybe could've spoken more about The Weekend but dw bbs i get it times are tough x
ReplyDeleteGood comparison of past Bond films to show the influence of the 'past form' element of audience appeal. In the first paragraph you have lead with a point and then gone into your detailed examples, remember to keep this going throughout to keep your writing sophisticated and get more fluidity in your writing. There is good use of statistics in your second paragraph to demonstrate you have revised and researched details about your case studies, and also is relevant to demonstrate the appeal to an audience, i.e the box office totals, well done hun xxxxxX
ReplyDeleteYou've explored the audience appeal for Skyfall really well and included a lot information, but you could've tried to match that for Kingsman and Weekend.
ReplyDeleteYou effectively evaluated some of the factors that led to audience appeal and showed a clear understanding of the film industry, but instead of leading with your case studies you could have led with the points and therefore allowed yourself to refer equally to all three case studies.
ReplyDeleteAnswer had clear structure and the texts used were clearly referenced (you mentioned the director and the year of production for each). Comments on the fact that some films (Skyfall) were more appealing to their audience because of their established franchise were nice. Even better was the comparison with low-budget, one off films such as Weekend.
ReplyDeleteI like how you compared and contrasted the main texts to show how they differ but how they would still gain audience appeal. I think to improve you should elaborate on your other two main texts (The Weekend/Kingsman) to support your reasonings as to why they still gain audience appeal as you wrote a detailed amount to back up your reasonings for Skyfall.
ReplyDeleteYou've applied CCCEO to your answer. This has the potential to be a good answer as the structure of your writing is good and you linked text together. If you spoke about more comparisons between your texts, it would boost your answer
