This Halloween has seen the new upcoming craze of coloured
and patterned contact lenses. With everything from bright red, to zebra print,
these new items have become a must for people around the world dressing up for Halloween.
But Experts have issued a warning that zero powered lenses, that are readily
available in fancy dress shops, can even cause blindness.
These contact lenses
are put in by the person wearing them, just the same as normal contact lenses.
However opticians and doctors have warned that only prescription lenses should
be worn ahead of the festive period.
One wearer of the contacts told the Daily Star that she
nearly went blind one 21-year-old wearer told Daily Star that she nearly lost
her vision. She said: “It was horrible. I bought the lenses on eBay and didn't
think about their safety as loads of my friends have used them." She then
added “"As soon as
I put them in I felt like my eyes were being scraped. I didn't know what I was
feeling but I knew my eyes were being damaged".
Doctors and opticians have noticed an increasing number
of acute eye care presentations where members of the public are not aware of
the dangers of using these lenses without following proper advice. Using these
contacts can lead to eye infections as severe as lasting up to 4 months, damage
the cornea or in the very worst case, blindness.
