Weekly News Update 8

In the news this week my story comes from ‘The Sun’ and it is of the return of the tragic and barbaric story of 47 year old aid worker Alan Hemming who was beheaded by the terrorist group ISIS. On Thursday 12th November 2015, Alan’s 18 year old daughter Lucy appeared on the Jeremy Kyle Show, where she spoke publicly for the very first time about the heart-breaking beheading of her father. She mentioned the reason that she or anyone from her family had not publicly spoken about her father was because as quoted by her “Everything said on TV is twisted by the media, and there’s no way my Dad’s story could be twisted because it is one the most real and raw stories ever to be heard, so I wanted you all to hear our story, and not a twisted version of it”, and I could not agree more with Lucy’s statement.

Perhaps the most tragic part of the interview between Jeremy Kyle and Lucy was when Lucy told the audience and the viewers how she found out about her father’s death. Lucy found out her Dad had been beheaded by a terrorist group on instagram. A social networking site. Not by a phone call or a personal visit, Lucy saw it on instagram, and not just the headline. She witnessed the final photo after his execution, something no one, let alone a daughter should have to see.

Jeremy asked Lucy how she is dealing with the loss of her father and she replied “I think I’m still numb. I just try and get everyone to remember like, the kids that are still there, when people say, “Oh, you’ve lost your dad,” Yeah I know but there’s kids there that are lost, and lose all their family in one day and they are stuck there on their own.”

I was particularly interested in this story because I actually watched the interview on Thursday, and the sheer strength and maturity this 18 year old had was inspirable, and the events this family went through, for example being told her Dad was coming home at one point, made me realise just how real and horrifying events like this in the world are.
