Weekly News Update 18

My story this week comes from the BBC news, and tells the story of a remarkable man named Darek Fidyka who, in 2010, was involved in a brutal knife attack that left him paralysed from the chest downwards. In 2014, surgeons in Poland announced they had reversed Darek Fidyka's paralysis using cells taken from his nose to repair his spinal cord, and since his life changing operation, things have started to change.
The former fireman says that he began to notice a gradual feeling of feeling and sensations in his body that was once of no feeling at all, since his operation, Darek has stated he wants to be able to ride a bike again, and that is exactly what he went on to do. Mr Fidyka told a BBC correspondent “: "I can tell that sensation is coming back and I am getting stronger. A year ago I would not have been able to ride a tricycle. Now I can feel each muscle and each press of the foot on the pedals."
The surgical team that performed this life changing operation on Darek, are now launching a search for two more paralysed patients who they are hoping to help to try and walk again. Dr Pawel Tabakow, this main surgeon in hope of this goal has said “If we succeed, we will have found a cure for paralysis”.
Scientists have been researching this life changing process for 40 years, and it seems now that a breakthrough may be just around the corner.
I found this story really interesting because paralysis is such a major health problem which takes people of their movement and their freedom, so for a breakthrough to cure this problem to possibly be round the corner, it is a really exciting time for medics. The fact it came from the BBC allows the audience to believe the story as this is a reliable source, but it doesn’t emphasise and spread across the news the hope of a cure, it just states that it may be possible.

  1. Your analysis is very well developed, including an opinion based answer as well as factual information from the article itself. You also discussed how the origins of the article affect the story reliability and information.

Perhaps try to discuss the standing of the BBC, how this may affect the writing that took place. You could try using quotes and comparing them to other sources and seeing how they vary on the same story.

  4. You clearly discussed the details of the news article and it is clear that it was carefully considered to relate to one or more of the areas of representation - in this case, disability. Likewise, you stated the source of the article and explained why you chose it.
