My story
this week comes from the Mirror and addresses issues that are offensive and
sensitive. Celebrity Big Brother kicked out its latest series on 5th
January 2016, and among the heap of very different celebrity housemates was
Winston McKenzie. Winston is a British political activist with extreme views
that sent not only the Celebrity Big Brother into a spiral of anger and
frustration, but the British public.
| Winston tried to defend his views |
Winston made
a statement in November 2012 in which he compared gay adoption to child abuse.
Gay adoption is a topic which is finally being accepted in the world, and it is
fantastic, even though the journey to the adoption is difficult, that any type
of couple whether they be heterosexual or homosexual are able to adopt and care
for children. Some members of the Celebrity Big Brother house are gay and when
Winston’s statement from 2012 was brought back up, actor John Partridge, who is
gay, was especially offended. The politician
said "To say to a child, 'I am having you adopted by two men who kiss
regularly but don't worry about it' – that is abuse”. "It is a violation
of a child's human rights because that child has no opportunity to grow up
under normal circumstances."
Winstonwas
challenged by nearly every member of the house, and as he rushed to attempt to
defend the comments made, John Partridge looked visibly upset and disgusted. Opening
up about his views on gay adoption Winston told the housemates “I’m a
Christian. How can I go against my beliefs? No I’m not homophobic, no I don’t
hate gays, people live their lives as according to how they want to live.”
| John Partridge was visibly distressed and angry |
In my
opinion, I think the views of Winston are extremely wrong, and offensive to gay
couples. This man calls himself the ‘people’s person’ yet by withholding these
opinions he has not only offended the gay community, but those in support of
it. Children deserve a loving and caring upbringing and there is absolutely no
reason why 2 men cannot provide this for a child, and the fact that Winston
cannot see this, and is prepared to compare to gay adoption to something as
horrific as child abuse makes me angry about the views that are still lingering
in our world today.
I think you chose an interesting article and responded well in terms of content, however could you write more about the context? For example does the fact that the article was written by the mirror have an impact? I also think you added a good personal response showing your opinions on the article which was effective.
ReplyDeleteWinston is disgusting, I completely agree with you. But I had seen people saying it was unfair and unprofessional of Big Brother to bring up such a comment as they knew what the consequences of it would be which could be argued I guess, but you have shown a clear understanding of the story and included your own opinion, Well doneeee
ReplyDeleteYou produced a very good analysis. You gave a good description of the news story and included the website you have found it on. You also gave a good personal opinion about the whole story. Also, a good use of the image as it relates to the story and makes it more appealing to the reader.
