Weekly News Update 11

I found this story extremely interesting because at a time where attacks and burglaries are on high alert, it is important that we as a society are aware of the people around us because you can never be too sure. I was also drawn to this story because it highlighted the importance of security not just in the home but also in our country, because incidents can happen without being stopped in the blink of an eye and if our security within ourselves and for other’s isn’t focused, in certain situations we could put ourselves in danger.

In this week’s news, my story comes from the Daily Mail. It’s the story, of the Saturday night king Simon Cowell, and the horrific burglary him and his family encountered on Thursday 3rd December. Patrolling the area was M’ Bathonha Mendes at the time when he realised a suspicious man lingering on the corner of Cowell’s house.

The man had a large black bag in his arms and his hat was covering the majority of his face. Mendes told the Daily Mail “I saw this man lingering so I got out my car, and this was about 1.50am. As soon as I got out the car the man walked quickly away from me, so I walked to the place he was standing I noticed a passport and when I picked it up, it was Simon Cowell’s. So I jumped back into my car and chased after the man to discover he had a bag of jewellery”.

Cowell’s bodyguard at the house, however, was totally oblivious to the theft and when Mendes came to the house to ask if the guard had seen anything, the guard said he had been in the toilet. Since the burglary, Cowell has said the guard has been fired and Mendes will be getting a Christmas bonus for his valour.

Cowell called Mendes a hero as he gave an interview (pictured) outside the house that was robbed. Mendes explained how he accosted him then recovered the bag of jewels and Cowell's passport
